Which ball matches which coupler?
A coupler and a ball look interchangeable at a glance and are not. The socket inside a coupler is machined to one exact diameter, and a ball even a fraction of an inch off that size either will not close at all or will close in a way that looks secure and is not. Only a matching stamped size closes correctly; a 1-7/8 inch coupler over a 2 inch ball appears to latch and will release.

What causes a coupler to fail on the road?
The single most common cause of a coupler separating from the ball on the road is a mismatched diameter that appeared to latch at the driveway.
Rule of thumb Widely taught towing convention rather than a published specification. It is a good starting point and it is not a rating.

Can a 2 inch coupler go on a 2-5/16 inch ball?
No. A 2 inch coupler is machined for a 2 inch ball and will not close correctly, or at all, over the larger 2-5/16 inch diameter. If it does appear to close, it is not gripping the ball the way the latch is designed to, and it is not safe to tow. Always match the exact size stamped on the coupler.
Why does a mismatched ball sometimes appear to latch?
A coupler one size larger than its ball, such as a 2 inch coupler over a 1-7/8 inch ball, can drop down and swing the latch closed because the socket is roomy enough to allow it. The latch is not actually gripping the ball correctly, and the connection can separate under the motion of towing even though it looked secure in the driveway.
What happens if the coupler and ball have different capacity ratings?
The lower of the two ratings governs, along with the shank and the receiver behind them. A 10,000 lb ball on a coupler rated for only 5,000 lb does not make the setup safe to 10,000 lb; the coupler is the limiting part. Check every component's own stamped rating rather than assuming the highest number in the chain applies.
Where is the coupler size stamped?
Most couplers have the diameter stamped or cast into the top of the coupler head or near the latch mechanism itself. Some trailers repeat it on a small tag mounted on the A-frame near the coupler. If the stamp has worn away, measure the internal socket diameter with calipers rather than guessing from the ball you already own.
Do I need a new ball every time I buy a different trailer?
Only if the new trailer's coupler is stamped for a different diameter than the ball you already have. Many owners standardize on a 2-5/16 inch ball and coupler across their trailers for exactly this reason, since it is the size most heavy travel trailers and weight distribution hitches are built around.
Is an adapter ever acceptable to bridge two ball sizes?
No. There is no adapter that safely bridges a coupler stamped for one diameter to a ball of a different diameter. The fix is always to fit a ball, or a full ball mount, of the exact size stamped on the coupler, not to add a sleeve or bushing between mismatched parts.
