Tongue weight is the downward force the coupler puts on the ball when the trailer is loaded and hitched. It is not the trailer's total weight and it is not read off any brochure: it is measured at the coupler, with everything aboard the way it will actually travel.

What is tongue weight, exactly?

Tongue weight is the share of a loaded trailer's weight that presses straight down on the hitch ball rather than riding on the trailer's own axles. On a fifth wheel or gooseneck the equivalent figure is called pin weight, and it runs to a much higher percentage because the geometry is different. How does tongue weight drive weight distribution bar sizing?

Weight distribution spring bars are rated by tongue weight, and the published rating has to bracket the actual loaded tongue weight, including anything hung on the A-frame: propane cylinders, batteries, a generator, a bike rack. Bars sized far above the real tongue weight ride harshly and distribute poorly; bars sized below it bottom out and cannot do the job.

A trailer with a weighed 900 lb tongue weight calls for 1,000 lb bars, not the next size down and not the next size up.

Bar ratings are published by every hitch maker. The "typical trailer GTW" column is a common pairing, not a rating: size bars to your weighed tongue weight, not to your trailer's brochure weight.

How do you measure actual tongue weight?

  1. Load the trailer the way it will actually travel. Fill fresh water, load the propane cylinders, pack cargo where it will actually ride. A dry, empty trailer will not give you a real number.
  2. Use a dedicated tongue weight scale. A scale built for the job, such as the Sherline LM 2000, reads tongue weight directly at the coupler with the trailer level and the tow vehicle in its normal towing stance.
  3. Or use a bathroom scale and a short pipe as a fulcrum. Set the scale a measured distance from a pivot point under the coupler, read the scale, then scale the reading up by the ratio of the two distances. Less precise than a dedicated scale, but far better than guessing.
  4. Compare the result to the band above. Divide the reading by the trailer's total loaded weight to get a percentage, then check it against the 10 to 15 percent band in the first table on this page.
