What does each wire color do on a trailer connector?

The widely followed 7-way trailer wiring color code runs white for ground, brown for running lights, yellow for left turn and brake, green for right turn and brake, blue for electric brakes, red for reverse lights, and black for 12V auxiliary power. Not every trailer or vehicle harness follows it exactly, so testing each function before towing is still required.

Trailer wiring uses a standardized color code so that a shop, a manufacturer and a DIY installer working from a diagram can all agree on what a given wire does without opening the connector to trace it. The code below is the one most 7-way RV blade connectors, and the harnesses built to match them, follow.

No inspection can substitute for testing. What does each wire color do on a 7-way connector?

The blue wire carries the electric brake signal, and it is the one wire that a time delay or proportional brake controller actually uses to apply the trailer brakes.

This color code is followed by the great majority of 7-way RV blade harnesses and is taught the same way across trailer and RV wiring diagrams, but no single regulation mandates it for every manufacturer. Test every circuit with a helper watching the lights before towing, regardless of what the wire color suggests.

A 4-way flat connector carries only 4 circuits: ground, running lights, and the two turn and brake light circuits, with no dedicated electric brake or auxiliary power wire at all.

A trailer with electric brakes needs at minimum a 5-way connector. A 4-way flat cannot power a brake controller circuit at all, regardless of what color the wires are, because the circuit does not exist on that connector.

What happens when the color code does not match?

A mismatched color code does not usually cause a fire or damage on its own, because each circuit is fused or protected separately, but it does cause exactly the wrong lights to come on: a left turn signal that triggers the right side, brake lights that stay on constantly, or trailer brakes that never engage. How do you fix a corroded or mismatched connector?

The socket and plug themselves fail more often than the color-coded wire behind them, especially where the connector hangs exposed near the road.

A replacement vehicle-side socket fixes intermittent trailer lights far more often than re-tracing the color code, because a corroded socket is the more common failure point.

Does the blue brake wire also set the brake gain?

No. The blue wire only carries the signal from the brake controller to the trailer's brake magnets; it does not set how hard those brakes engage.
