Do you need weight distribution, and which spring bars?
Start with the thing most people get wrong. A weight distribution hitch does not raise any capacity. It does not add payload, it does not raise the GVWR, it does not raise the GCWR, and it does not raise an axle rating. A truck that sits level while overloaded is still overloaded.
What it does is move load that is sitting on the tow vehicle rear axle forward onto the steer axle and back onto the trailer axles. That restores steering feel, braking and headlight aim, all of which a heavy tongue takes away. Some receivers carry a higher weight-distributing rating published by their maker, and that higher number belongs to the receiver, not to the hitch.
Check the triggers and size the bars
Weight distribution is called for on both triggers. It restores steering and braking; it does not raise any capacity.

The working

Both triggers are towing convention. Your owner manual may require weight distribution at a different figure, and that requirement governs. Widely taught towing convention rather than a published specification. It is a good starting point and it is not a rating.

When is weight distribution called for?
Two conventional triggers, and either one is enough:
- A loaded trailer above roughly 5,000 lb. The usual rule of thumb, and the one most people know.
- A tongue weight above about 10 percent of the TOW VEHICLE weight. This is the one people miss. A 500 lb tongue behind a 4,500 lb SUV is 11 percent of the vehicle and wants weight distribution even though the trailer is well under 5,000 lb.
Your vehicle manufacturer may also require it above a stated trailer weight in order to honour the tow rating at all. That requirement is in your owner manual and it overrides both rules of thumb above.
Choosing the spring bar rating
Spring bars are rated by tongue weight, not by trailer weight, and the rating should bracket your weighed figure rather than sit far above it.
Bars that are far too stiff for the load ride harshly and distribute badly. Bars that are too light bottom out and cannot do the job at all.
Published standard A published, traceable figure: a standards body, a federal regulation or a manufacturer specification states it.

Use the WEIGHED tongue weight including everything bolted to the A-frame: propane cylinders, batteries, a generator, a bike rack. A brochure figure will send you to the wrong bars.
What the A-frame adds
Anything mounted on the A-frame sits ahead of the trailer axle, which is the highest leverage position on the trailer, so it lands almost entirely on the tongue:
- Two full 20 lb propane cylinders, about 74 lb including the steel bottles
- A group 24 battery, about 50 lb, or two of them at 100 lb
- A generator in the front box, 48 to 100 lb
- A bike rack and two bikes, about 90 lb
Adding a second battery is a real tongue weight change, and it can move you into a different bar rating.
Round bars against trunnion bars
Round bars hang below the head and give more clearance at the bar itself, which suits trailers with a low A-frame. Trunnion bars slot into the head horizontally, sit higher, and give more ground clearance and more room behind the bumper, which matters on a trailer with a front mounted generator box or a low A-frame.
Both distribute weight the same way. The choice is about clearance and about what the head you are buying accepts, not about performance.
Frequently asked questions
Does a weight distribution hitch increase towing capacity?
No. It moves load between axles and changes nothing about your payload, GVWR, GCWR or axle ratings. Some receivers carry a higher weight-distributing rating published by their maker, and that higher number is a property of the receiver rather than something the hitch confers. Fitting a weight distribution hitch to a receiver with no weight-distributing rating does not create one.
At what trailer weight do I need weight distribution?
Conventionally above roughly 5,000 lb of loaded trailer, or when the tongue weight exceeds about 10 percent of the tow vehicle weight, whichever comes first. The second trigger is the one people miss, because it depends on the tow vehicle rather than the trailer. Your owner manual may also require it at a stated weight to honour the tow rating.
How do I pick the right spring bar rating?
From your weighed tongue weight, including everything on the A-frame: propane cylinders, the battery, a generator, a bike rack. The bar rating should bracket that figure. Bars far too stiff ride harshly and distribute poorly, and bars too light bottom out and cannot do the job. A brochure tongue weight will send you to the wrong bars.
Round bars or trunnion bars?
They distribute weight the same way, so the choice is about clearance. Round bars hang below the head and suit trailers with a higher A-frame. Trunnion bars sit horizontally in the head, give more ground clearance and leave more room behind the bumper, which matters on a trailer with a low A-frame or a front mounted generator box.
Is sway control the same as weight distribution?
No, they are separate jobs that are often sold together. Weight distribution restores load to the steer axle so you can steer and brake properly. Sway control damps or resists the yaw oscillation itself. Some hitches integrate both into one head, others need a separate friction bar. Neither one fixes a trailer loaded tail-heavy.
Will weight distribution fix a trailer that sways?
Only partly, and not at the root. Sway is almost always caused by too little tongue weight from a tail-heavy load, and no hitch can change where the trailer centre of mass sits. Move cargo forward of the trailer axle and re-weigh first. Weight distribution and sway control then give you back the control to correct, which is worth having but is not the fix.
