GVWR and GCWR are frequently used as if they measure the same kind of thing at two different sizes, and they do not. GVWR is a single-vehicle number: the most the vehicle itself may weigh, fully loaded with passengers, cargo and everything else, sitting on its own wheels with nothing attached behind it. GCWR is a combined number: the most the vehicle and a trailer may weigh added together, and it exists specifically because towing introduces a second mass that GVWR alone was never built to account for.

A third rating sits underneath both of them and gets overlooked more often than either: GAWR, the maximum weight one individual axle may carry. A vehicle can be entirely within its GVWR while one specific axle, usually the rear, is over its own GAWR, because GVWR is a total and GAWR is a per-axle limit that a total can hide.

All three of these figures are BASIS.VEHICLE: they exist only on the specific vehicle in front of you, printed on its own door jamb sticker or stated in its own owner's manual, and no chart on this site can supply a number for a vehicle it has never seen.

What does GVWR actually limit, and what does it not limit?

GVWR limits the vehicle alone, fully loaded, with nothing towed behind it. Passengers, cargo, fuel, a bed load and any tongue or pin weight from a trailer all count toward GVWR, because all of that weight physically rests on the vehicle's own frame and suspension regardless of whether a trailer is attached. What GVWR does not cover is the trailer's own weight beyond what is transferred through the hitch, which is exactly the gap GCWR exists to close.

What does GCWR add that GVWR does not cover?

The trailer's own mass, rolling on its own wheels, added to the vehicle's total. GCWR is the ceiling on the vehicle and trailer combined, and it is the figure that actually governs whether a specific loaded vehicle can safely pull a specific loaded trailer, since GVWR alone says nothing about what is attached behind the hitch. Checking GCWR headroom separately from GVWR is not optional busywork: a vehicle comfortably inside its own GVWR can still be well over its GCWR once a heavy trailer is added, and the reverse oversight, checking GCWR while ignoring GVWR, misses the payload problem that binds first on most half-ton trucks.

How do the three ratings actually relate to each other?

These are published definitions, BASIS.STANDARD. The actual numeric figures for any of the three exist only on your own specific vehicle, BASIS.VEHICLE, and have to be read from your own sticker and manual.

How can GVWR check out fine while a rear axle is still overloaded?

Because GVWR is a total across both axles and GAWR is a limit on one of them individually, a load that sits unevenly, front-heavy or rear-heavy, can exhaust one axle's GAWR while the vehicle's combined weight remains under GVWR overall. A fifth wheel is the clearest example: its pin weight, conventionally 15 to 25 percent of trailer weight, lands almost entirely on the rear axle rather than being spread evenly across the vehicle. Suppose, purely as an illustration of the arithmetic rather than a real vehicle's figures, a truck's total load sits comfortably under its GVWR while nearly all of that load's weight concentrates over the rear wheels: the rear GAWR can be exceeded in that scenario even though the GVWR check alone would show no problem at all. Checking GAWR separately, per axle, is the only way to catch this.

Does a weight distribution hitch or air bag change any of these three numbers?

No. A weight distribution hitch redistributes load between axles, which can help a GAWR problem by moving weight off an overloaded rear axle and onto the steer axle, but it does not raise the GAWR figure itself, and it does not raise GVWR or GCWR either. Air bags and helper springs level a squatting rear end and change none of the three numbers underneath that improved ride height. All three ratings are fixed properties of the vehicle as built, stated on its own sticker, and no aftermarket hardware changes what that sticker says.

GCWR is virtually always the larger number, because it includes the trailer's own weight on top of the vehicle's GVWR-equivalent loaded weight. Comparing the two directly is less useful than checking each one against its own limit: GVWR against the vehicle alone, GCWR against the vehicle and trailer combined.

Can my GCWR be fine while my GVWR is exceeded?

Yes, and this is exactly why both need checking separately rather than assuming one covers the other. A heavily loaded vehicle with a light trailer can exceed its own GVWR from passengers and cargo alone while remaining comfortably under GCWR, since GCWR's larger number has more headroom to absorb the same overload.

What is GAWR and why does it matter separately from GVWR?

GAWR is the maximum weight one individual axle, front or rear, may carry, stated separately from the vehicle's total GVWR.
