Dry weight or GVWR: which number tells you what you can actually pack?
Dry weight and GVWR are not two ways of saying the same thing, and treating them as interchangeable is the single most expensive mistake in trailer shopping. Dry weight is what the trailer weighs empty from the factory, excluding dealer-installed options, batteries, propane and every drop of water; GVWR is the most it may legally weigh loaded, and the gap between the two, minus those fluids, is the cargo you can actually pack.
The confusion is not an accident. A brochure leads with dry weight because it is the smaller, more flattering number, and it says nothing about what the trailer actually weighs once it is equipped the way it ships to a dealer and loaded the way an owner tows it. The yellow or white cargo carrying capacity label riveted to the trailer itself, not the brochure and not this page, is the number that governs a specific trailer.
A 2,000 lb capacity tongue weight scale and a public truck scale are how you find out what a trailer actually weighs loaded, which is the only way to know your real cargo carrying capacity rather than the printed one.
What exactly does a brochure dry weight leave out?
Dry weight, sometimes printed as UVW or unloaded vehicle weight, is the trailer as it left the factory with nothing added and nothing filled. It specifically excludes:
- Dealer-installed options: a second air conditioner, a solar package, an upgraded awning, a generator prep, a washer and dryer prep, and heavier furniture substitutions all get added after the dry weight is stamped on the trailer.
- Batteries, commonly 50 lb for a group 24 lead acid battery or roughly 30 lb for a 100 Ah lithium replacement.
- Propane, at 4.24 lb per gallon, plus the weight of the steel cylinder itself. A full 20 lb cylinder is about 37 lb once the empty bottle is counted.
- Every drop of water, fresh, grey or black, at 8.34 lb per gallon. A 50 gallon fresh tank alone is 417 lb full.
None of that is hidden or dishonest. It is simply not what "dry weight" has ever meant, and a buyer comparing two trailers by dry weight alone is comparing two numbers that leave out different amounts of real weight depending on how each one is optioned.

A full 20 lb propane cylinder weighs about 37 lb because the steel bottle itself is roughly 17 lb. It is easy to count the propane and forget the bottle.
GVWR minus dry weight is sometimes called the nominal cargo capacity, and it is already a more honest number than dry weight alone, but it still includes the water, propane and batteries that never actually become cargo you packed. Subtracting those out gives the true cargo carrying capacity, the number printed on the trailer's own label.
On a 6,000 lb dry weight trailer with an 8,000 lb GVWR, a 40 gallon fresh tank, two propane cylinders and one battery take 508 lb before a single item of cargo is packed.

These illustrative figures are not a rating for any specific trailer. Your own trailer's certification label states its own GVWR, dry weight and cargo carrying capacity directly, and that label is the authority, not this table.
Why does water swing the number more than anything else?
Because it is the biggest single variable and the one most travelers never account for. Fresh tanks on towable trailers commonly run from 20 to 100 gallons, and at 8.34 lb per gallon that spans roughly 167 to 834 lb depending on tank size and how full it is. A trailer with a modest cargo carrying capacity can hand most of it straight back by traveling with the fresh tank empty and filling it at the destination, which is exactly why that trick is the cheapest capacity upgrade available on any trailer.
It runs the other direction too: filling the tank before a long trip because a campground ahead has no hookups converts that same capacity into water weight, and the trailer's actual loaded weight, tongue weight and available cargo room all move with it.
Does the dry weight and GVWR gap connect to tongue weight too?
Yes, directly. Tongue weight is a percentage of the trailer's loaded weight, conventionally 10 to 15 percent, so every pound added to close the gap between dry weight and GVWR also adds roughly a tenth of a pound to the tow vehicle's payload through the hitch. A trailer packed close to its cargo carrying capacity is also a trailer sitting close to the top of its tongue weight range, and both numbers need to be checked before a trip, not just one of them.
