How do you adjust weight distribution bar tension correctly?

Start with the shank, not the bars
The shank sets how high the ball sits, and that height decides whether the trailer rides level before a single bar is even tensioned. Bar tension cannot fix a shank that is the wrong length: it will lift or lower the tow vehicle's rear end, but a trailer that is nose high or nose low from an incorrect shank stays nose high or nose low no matter how the bars are set. Adjusting chain-style tension
- Level the trailer with no bars fitted. Hitch on the plain ball, get the trailer frame level, and note how far the tow vehicle's rear end has dropped from its unhitched height.
- Hook the chain at the middle link first. A middle link leaves room to go tighter or looser in either direction on the first pass, rather than starting maxed out with nowhere left to adjust.
- Lift both bars to the same link. Uneven tension side to side twists the hitch head and can make the trailer track slightly off center. Match the link on both chains exactly.
- Measure the rear sag recovered. A properly tensioned setup commonly recovers on the order of half to three quarters of the sag noted in step one. Recovering all of it usually means the bars are working too hard for their rating.
- Move one link at a time. One link is a large jump in tension on most chain hitches. Change one side, then the matching link on the other side, and remeasure before changing again.
- Confirm the trailer is level, not just the truck. If the tow vehicle recovers correctly but the trailer still is not level, the shank height is wrong and no chain adjustment fixes that.
Adjusting clamp latch and cone style tension
Clamp latch hitches, the kind that use rotating brackets rather than a chain link, set tension by where the bracket clamps onto the trailer frame rather than by counting links. Moving the bracket forward or back along the frame changes the leverage the same way a different chain link would. Re-tension whenever the load changes
Tension is not a set-and-forget adjustment. A full fresh water tank, a new battery bank, a generator added to the front of the trailer, or simply a different trailer entirely all change the weighed tongue weight, and the correct tension moves with it.
