How should you load a travel trailer so it tows straight?

  3. Keep light, bulky items toward the rear. Bedding, empty coolers, folding chairs and similarly light items belong behind the axle, since their low weight has less effect on tongue weight even though they take up rear space.
  4. Distribute weight side to side as carefully as front to back. A trailer loaded heavy on one side rides tilted and can behave unpredictably in a crosswind or a hard turn, independent of whether the front-to-back balance is correct.
  5. Secure everything so it cannot shift in transit. A load that shifts rearward during a drive, from braking or from a rough road, can move tongue weight out of the safe band mid trip without any warning beyond the trailer starting to feel different.

Side to side balance is a separate problem

Front-to-back placement controls tongue weight. Side-to-side placement controls whether the trailer sits and tows level laterally, which is a different concern and equally easy to get wrong. A heavy item loaded consistently on one side, a full water tank on one flank with the other empty, or a generator always stored on the same side, tilts the trailer slightly and can make it more sensitive to crosswinds or to a hard turn on that side.

Check side-to-side balance the same way as front-to-back: load with intent, and if a scale with individual wheel pads is available, compare left and right side weights rather than assuming a centred layout is automatically even.
