How do you read the federal certification label on a trailer?
Every travel trailer and fifth wheel sold new carries a federal certification label, riveted or bolted in place rather than printed on paper that can be lost. It is usually found on the road-facing side of the A-frame on a bumper pull trailer, or near the front cap on a fifth wheel, though placement varies by manufacturer.
This label is the trailer's equivalent of the tow vehicle's door jamb sticker, and it carries the same authority: the figures on it belong to the exact trailer it is attached to, not to the model name on the side, and they override anything printed in a brochure or listed on a dealer's website.
What is on the certification label
The label states GVWR, the GAWR for each axle, and the tire size and cold inflation pressure the trailer's axles and tires were specified against.
Published standard A published, traceable figure: a standards body, a federal regulation or a manufacturer specification states it.

Where to find it and how to read it
- Look at the road-facing side of the A-frame. On most conventional travel trailers this is where the certification label is riveted. It is a small metal or foil plate, easy to miss under road grime.
- On a fifth wheel, check near the front cap or the pin box area. Placement varies more on fifth wheels than on bumper pull trailers, so check the front of the trailer generally if the A-frame area shows nothing.
- Read the GVWR first. This is your ceiling for the trailer's total loaded weight, everything included: cargo, water, propane, batteries and the trailer itself.
- Read the GAWR for each axle. On a tandem axle trailer, load can shift toward one axle if cargo sits unevenly front to back, so the axle rating matters even when the total weight is fine.
- Note the tire size and cold inflation pressure. This is the pressure the trailer's axles and suspension were specified around. Run the tires at this figure cold unless you have changed tire size or load range since, in which case the tire's own sidewall maximum takes over.
- Look for a separate cargo carrying capacity label. Many trailers carry a second yellow or white label stating CCC directly, which saves you from calculating GVWR minus unloaded weight yourself.
Why the label, not the brochure, is the authority
A brochure describes the model as originally configured at the factory. The certification label describes the individual trailer it is attached to, built on a specific date with whatever options were actually installed. Dealer-installed accessories, a second air conditioner, an upgraded awning, a generator prep, a solar package, all add weight after the brochure figure was printed and none of them appear in it.
The gap between a brochure's advertised cargo capacity and the label's actual figure on a heavily optioned trailer can run into several hundred pounds. Reading the label on the specific trailer you are about to buy, or already own, is the only way to know the real number.
What to do if the label is damaged or missing
Contact the manufacturer with the trailer's VIN, stamped on the frame near the hitch coupler on most trailers, and request a replacement or a copy of the build sheet. Do not estimate a GVWR or GAWR from a similar trailer of the same model, since options and build date both change the actual figures, and a wrong guess in either direction is exactly the kind of plausible-looking number that causes real damage.

If you have since changed tire size or load range, the new tire's own sidewall maximum becomes the figure to follow, because the label was written for a tire that is no longer on the trailer.
Why do I need to check GAWR per axle instead of just GVWR?
Because cargo loaded unevenly front to back on a tandem axle trailer can push one axle over its rating while the trailer's total weight is still under GVWR. A generator or a full water tank sitting near one axle rather than centred between them is a common way this happens without the total weight looking like a problem.
Are dealer-installed options reflected on the certification label?
The label is applied at the factory, so options added afterward by a dealer are not reflected in it directly, though they do consume real cargo carrying capacity. Where a separate CCC label exists it is typically calculated including known factory options, but a dealer addition after that point still comes out of the number you actually have to pack with.
Can two trailers of the same model have different GVWR figures?
Yes, if they were built with different axle packages, different tire and wheel packages, or different option levels across model years. The certification label on the individual trailer in front of you is the only figure specific to that trailer, the same way a tow vehicle's payload depends on its own exact build rather than the badge on the tailgate.
