How do you work out what an SUV can actually carry while towing?
We will not tell you what an SUV can tow, for the same reason we will not say it about any named truck: a published tow rating belongs to one exact configuration, and the same model badge can hide a meaningfully different payload from one trim or drivetrain to the next. What we can walk through is the arithmetic, and an SUV has two things working against it that a comparable pickup usually does not.
First, payload. An SUV's cargo area and rear seats add weight and structure that a pickup bed does not carry, which frequently leaves less payload margin for the same overall vehicle size. Second, geometry. Many SUVs run a shorter wheelbase and softer rear spring rates than a truck built to carry a bed load, tuned instead for ride comfort in everyday driving. Put the same tongue weight behind both, and the SUV squats more visibly and loses more of its own steering feel.
Both problems point at the same fix: work the payload sum against your own door jamb sticker, and pay closer attention to the ratio between your trailer's length and your SUV's wheelbase than a truck owner typically needs to.
Why an SUV squats more than a truck at the same tongue weight
A pickup's rear suspension is generally specified with a bed load already in mind, with spring rates and shock valving set up to carry cargo without excessive sag. An SUV's rear suspension is more often tuned primarily for unloaded ride comfort, since most of its life is spent carrying passengers rather than cargo. Add the same tongue weight to both and the SUV's softer rear end compresses further, which lowers the rear ride height, changes headlight aim and shifts weight off the front tires.
Wheelbase compounds this. A shorter wheelbase gives less leverage to resist the trailer's own yaw motion, which is why the trailer-length-to-wheelbase ratio is worth checking specifically on an SUV rather than assumed to be fine because the vehicle "looks big enough." A long trailer behind a short-wheelbase SUV is a more demanding combination than the same trailer behind a long-bed truck, independent of what either vehicle's tow rating says.
Work the payload sum for your SUV

- Weigh your actual passengers and cargo. An SUV that regularly carries a full second and third row has less room left in the payload sum than the same model driven with one or two people.
- Add the hitch hardware. Weight distribution hardware adds roughly 100 lb, the same as it does behind a truck.
- Add tongue weight at 10 to 15 percent of the trailer's loaded weight. Weighed, not the brochure dry figure. A tail-heavy trailer's added tongue weight lands on the same rear axle that is already carrying less spring capacity than a truck's.
- Subtract the total from the payload rating. What remains is the real margin. On many SUVs this number is smaller than the tow rating implies, which is exactly the gap this page exists to close.
- Check the trailer-length-to-wheelbase ratio separately. This does not show up in the payload sum at all, and it affects stability independently of whether the payload sum passes.
Why the trailer-length-to-wheelbase ratio matters more here
A trailer's tendency to sway is driven partly by tongue weight and partly by geometry: a long trailer behind a short wheelbase has less leverage available to resist a developing yaw angle than the same trailer behind a longer platform. This matters more for an SUV specifically because SUV wheelbases skew shorter than a comparable truck's, so the same trailer produces a worse ratio behind the SUV.
A ratio above roughly 3.2 times the tow vehicle's wheelbase is the point where geometry alone becomes a meaningful contributor to sway risk, independent of how well the tongue weight is loaded.

Leveling the squat does not change the payload
An air spring kit sized for the Toyota 4Runner and Lexus GX460 or a similar kit fitted to the Jeep Gladiator restores ride height and steadies handling under a loaded tongue, which is a genuine improvement in how the SUV drives while towing. Neither one raises the payload rating, the GVWR or the rear axle GAWR by a single pound. The same rule that applies to a truck applies here without exception: a suspension aid changes how the load rides, not how much of it the vehicle is rated to carry.
