Why a truck camper is a payload problem, not a towing problem

A towable trailer distributes its weight between its own axles and the hitch. A truck camper puts one hundred percent of its weight onto the truck, since it sits in the bed and over the frame rather than rolling on its own wheels. There is no GCWR question here and no separate trailer brake system to size. The truck's own GVWR, payload rating and rear axle GAWR are the only limits that exist, and all three apply to the full wet weight of the camper plus everything riding in the cab.

This is also why the dry weight on a spec sheet is the least useful number a camper buyer can rely on. It describes a camper that nobody actually tows: no water in the tanks, no propane in the cylinders, no house battery installed, no gear inside, and often without factory options like a generator or a slide-out mechanism that are common on the units actually sold.

Matching a camper to your truck

  2. Start from the camper's dry weight, then add every option. Slide-outs, generators, awnings and upgraded appliances are frequently not included in the base dry weight and can add several hundred pounds on their own.
  3. Add full fresh, grey and black water. Water weighs about 8.34 lb per US gallon, so even a modest 20 gallon fresh tank is roughly 167 lb, and a camper often carries fresh, grey and black tanks together.
  4. Add full propane and the house battery or batteries. A full 20 lb cylinder is close to 37 lb including the steel bottle, and a single lead-acid battery is 50 to 65 lb depending on group size.
  5. Add gear: bedding, cookware, tools, clothing, food. This is the category buyers underestimate most, since a camper is furnished and stocked like a small apartment rather than packed for a single trip.
  6. Add passengers. Everyone riding in the cab while the camper is loaded counts against the same payload figure.
  7. Compare the total to the truck's payload rating. If the total exceeds the rating, the combination is over payload regardless of how the truck looks or drives with the camper installed.

The centre of gravity zone

Every truck camper has a centre of gravity marked on its own frame or sidewall, usually as a sticker or plate placed there by the camper manufacturer. Every truck capable of carrying a slide-in camper has a published CG zone relative to the rear axle, stated in the owner's manual or a body builder's guide. Loading the camper so its CG lands forward of the rear axle, inside that published zone, keeps enough weight on the steer axle for the truck to steer and brake normally.

A camper loaded tail-heavy, or one whose CG marking was never checked against the truck's zone in the first place, unloads the steer axle. The truck becomes progressively harder to steer and stop as speed increases, and this can happen well within the truck's payload rating, since the CG problem is about where the weight sits rather than how much of it there is.

Four turnbuckles are the only thing holding it on

A truck camper is secured to the bed by tie-down hardware, most commonly four turnbuckles connecting the camper's frame to anchor points on the truck. That hardware is structural for as long as the camper is mounted, and it corrodes, stretches and loosens like any other load-bearing fastener, usually inspected far less often than it deserves.
