How do you work out what you can actually tow?
Ask most people what limits what a vehicle can tow and they will say the tow rating. On paper that sounds right, and on most half ton trucks and nearly every SUV it is wrong, because the tow rating is calculated with only a driver in the vehicle and nothing else. Add real passengers, real cargo and a real hitch, and a completely different number runs out first: payload.
This page works through the limits in the order that actually matters. Payload first, because it is the one people forget and the one that fails soonest. Then GCWR, then the rear axle rating, then the hitch and receiver hardware, and only at the end the published tow rating itself, along with an explanation of why that figure belongs to one exact vehicle configuration and not to a model name.
This page will not tell you what your vehicle can tow. Nothing on this site can, because that number depends on your exact configuration and your exact loadout, both of which only you can supply. What follows is the arithmetic and the order to check it in, so you can work out your own answer with your own numbers.

Why payload comes first
Payload is the combined weight of everything added to the vehicle since it left the factory: passengers, cargo, hitch hardware, and the tongue or pin weight of whatever is being towed. It is printed as a single maximum figure on the yellow sticker in the driver door jamb, and unlike a tow rating, it does not assume an empty cab.
A conventional trailer's tongue weight runs 10 to 15 percent of its loaded weight, and a fifth wheel's pin weight runs 15 to 25 percent. On a mid size travel trailer that is several hundred pounds landing in the bed or on the receiver before a single passenger climbs in. Add two adults, some cargo, and a weight distribution hitch, and a payload rating that looked generous on paper can be exhausted well below the trailer weight the tow rating implies is fine.
This is not a flaw in the tow rating, it measures a different thing on purpose. It is a reason payload has to be checked first, every time, on every trip.

After passengers, cargo and hitch hardware, this illustrative 1,700 lb payload rating leaves about 1,090 lb for tongue or pin weight, which at 12 percent supports a conventional trailer of roughly 9,100 lb.

The 1,700 lb figure here is an example number, not any specific vehicle's rating. Read the payload sentence off your own door jamb sticker and redo this sum with your own passengers and gear.
Then check GCWR, a separate limit
Gross combined weight rating is the most the tow vehicle and trailer may weigh together, and it is a different ceiling from both payload and the tow rating. A rig can pass a payload check and still exceed GCWR if the trailer itself is heavy enough, because GCWR caps the combined total rather than what is loaded onto the tow vehicle alone.
Both the tow vehicle's loaded weight and the trailer's loaded weight, added together, have to stay under GCWR. This figure is on your own vehicle's certification, not in a brochure, and it is worth checking with a real scale reading from both vehicles rather than assumed figures.
Check the rear axle rating specifically
Tongue weight and pin weight both concentrate load onto the rear axle far more than they load the vehicle as a whole. A truck can sit comfortably inside its GVWR and still exceed its rear axle GAWR once a heavy tongue or pin weight lands behind the cab, because that load is not spread evenly across the vehicle the way the GVWR figure assumes.
The rear GAWR is on the same door jamb placard as the payload figure. Check it against your tongue or pin weight plus anything else riding in the bed, separately from the overall payload sum.
Only then, the published tow rating
A published tow rating belongs to one exact combination of engine, axle ratio, cab configuration, bed length and drivetrain, tested under a defined methodology (SAE J2807 on modern light duty vehicles) with specified occupants and a specified test route. It is not a property of a model name. Two vehicles wearing the identical badge can differ by several thousand pounds in their published tow rating, depending on which engine and axle ratio each one actually has.
A sentence of the form "this model tows this much" is therefore wrong for a large share of the vehicles wearing that badge. We cannot tell you whether your specific vehicle can tow a specific trailer, and neither can a review of a different configuration of the same model. Only your own door jamb sticker and owner's manual, matched to your exact vehicle as built, can answer that.
The limits, in the order to check them
Payload usually binds first on a half ton truck or an SUV, and every figure in this table comes from your own vehicle, never from this site.

The lowest of these five figures is your real limit for a given trip. Checking only the tow rating and skipping the rest is the single most common mistake in working out what a rig can actually carry.
Work through it in order
- Find your payload rating. Read the combined occupant and cargo weight sentence off your own door jamb placard. This is step one, before anything else.
- Add up passengers, cargo and hitch hardware. Weigh people and gear where the sum is close rather than estimating. Include the weight distribution hitch or fifth wheel hitch itself, which is real weight and easy to forget.
- Subtract from payload to see what is left for tongue or pin weight. This remaining figure caps how heavy a trailer you can load, once the conventional tongue or pin weight percentage is applied.
- Check GCWR against the combined loaded weight of both vehicles. Weigh both, or use their rated weights conservatively, and add them together against your GCWR figure.
- Check the rear axle GAWR against tongue or pin weight plus bed cargo. This is a separate check from the overall payload sum, because the load concentrates on one axle rather than spreading evenly.
- Check every hitch component's own rating. Receiver, ball mount, ball and shank each carry a stamped or labelled rating, and the assembled hitch is only as strong as the weakest part in the chain.
- Only now, read the published tow rating for your exact configuration. Match your engine, axle ratio, cab and drivetrain in the owner manual precisely. If any of the checks above already failed, the tow rating does not matter, since a lower limit already governs.

Why does payload matter more than the tow rating?

What is the difference between GCWR and the tow rating?
The tow rating is often expressed as the maximum trailer weight alone, while GCWR is the maximum combined weight of the tow vehicle and trailer together. A heavily loaded tow vehicle can push the combined total over GCWR with a trailer that is, on paper, within the tow rating, which is why both figures need checking separately.
Does a weight distribution hitch or air bags increase what I can tow?
No. Both restore ride height and improve handling by moving load between axles, and neither adds payload, raises GVWR, or raises any axle rating. A vehicle that sits level while carrying more than its payload rating is still over that rating, with the sag that would have warned you removed.
My truck's window sticker and an online spec sheet disagree, which one is right?
Your own door jamb sticker and owner's manual, matched to your exact VIN and build, are correct. A spec sheet or review often describes a different engine, axle ratio, cab or drivetrain than the one actually sitting in your driveway, and payload and tow ratings both belong to the specific configuration built, not to the model name.
Can two trucks with the identical name have different tow ratings?
Yes, routinely, by several thousand pounds. A published tow rating depends on engine, axle ratio, cab configuration, bed length and drivetrain, all of which vary within a single model name. This is exactly why a sentence like a given model can tow a given weight is unreliable for most of the vehicles wearing that badge.
