What does that towing term actually mean?
Towing mixes three kinds of term that look identical on a page and are not equivalent. A definition, like what GVWR stands for, is a published fact that does not change. A convention, like the 10 to 15 percent tongue weight band, is widely taught and published by no standards body. And a vehicle figure, like your own truck's actual GVWR, exists only on your own vehicle and nowhere on this site.

What do GVWR, GCWR, GAWR and GTW mean?
GCWR governs the tow vehicle and trailer together, while GAWR governs one axle at a time, and a rig can sit comfortably under its GVWR while a single axle is already over its own GAWR.

What is the difference between UVW, dry weight, CCC and NCC?
CCC subtracts full water, propane and batteries from the gap between GVWR and dry weight, while NCC does not, which is why NCC is always the bigger, more optimistic number.

Your trailer's own certification label states its CCC directly, and that figure is the authority over any brochure number or arithmetic done here.
What do tongue weight, pin weight, curb weight and payload mean?
Payload is GVWR minus curb weight, and tongue weight or pin weight comes out of that same payload rather than being carried by the trailer.

Which towing terms are widely taught conventions rather than published standards?
The 10 to 15 percent tongue weight band and the 15 to 25 percent pin weight band are taught by every trailer and hitch maker and published as a regulation by none of them.

What is SAE J2807?
J2807 is a test methodology that major light duty manufacturers adopted for producing a published tow rating, not a number itself. It specifies four things a combination has to do at a defined weight with defined occupants.
J2807 defines four tests, a launch on a grade, a sustained grade climb, highway handling and a cooling test, which is why several published tow ratings fell once manufacturers adopted it.

Because J2807 produces a rating rather than being one, no figure on this site is derived from it, and it does not tell you whether your specific vehicle can tow a specific trailer; the resulting number in your owner's manual does that, for your exact configuration only.
Hitch and hardware terms
A weight distribution hitch moves load already sitting on the rear axle forward; it does not create any new capacity, which is the single most misunderstood term in this table.

Load range sets a tire's ply rating and maximum cold pressure, while load index sets its exact pound capacity: two related but different published figures on the same sidewall.

What do sway, jackknife, off-track and tail swing mean on the road?
Sway is corrected with the trailer's own brakes, never the tow vehicle's, because a vehicle brake application under sway is what actually starts a jackknife.

What is the difference between GVWR and GCWR?
GVWR is the most a single vehicle, either the tow vehicle or the trailer, may weigh loaded on its own wheels. GCWR is the most the tow vehicle and trailer may weigh together as one hitched combination. A rig can be well under both trucks' individual GVWR figures and still be over the combined GCWR, which is why both numbers have to be checked separately.
Is dry weight the same thing as GVWR?
No. Dry weight, or UVW, is the trailer exactly as it left the factory, with no water, no propane, no batteries and no dealer-installed options. GVWR is the ceiling on how much the trailer may weigh fully loaded. The gap between the two, minus fluids and batteries, is the cargo carrying capacity, and dry weight alone tells you nothing about how much you can pack.

NCC, Net Carrying Capacity, is GVWR minus dry weight alone. CCC, Cargo Carrying Capacity, goes one step further and also subtracts full fresh water, full propane and batteries. NCC is always the larger number because it has not yet accounted for the fluids every trailer carries, which makes CCC the more realistic figure to shop and pack against.
What is the difference between a proportional and a time delay brake controller?
A proportional controller reads the tow vehicle's own deceleration through an internal sensor and matches the trailer brakes to it continuously, so a gentle stop gets gentle trailer braking and a hard stop gets hard trailer braking. A time delay controller ramps to a preset level on a timer regardless of how hard the tow vehicle is actually braking, which is a real functional step down for anything but a light, occasional trailer.
